Program: SQUIRTS
Schedule: Approximately September 1 thru March 31.
Ages: Generally 9 & 10.
Ice Time: Approximately two sixty minute practices including skills clinics and one league game per week.
Location: Area rinks.
Description: Players on Squirt teams will be entered into the Valley Hockey League for game play. Most of the games are on weekends and are hosted at various local rinks. Games consist of three twelve minute periods, full ice sheets, and certified referees. Game jerseys with name plate are provided for each player, with the game jersey turned in at the end of the season. You can expect between 25 and 30 games per season in Dual State action. League playoffs are held in April and are also included if the team qualifies. Each team will be entered into the State Playdown Tournament.
Practices are held primarily at the Groton School and Lawrence Academy, with some early season and late season practices held at other local rinks. The number of teams will be dependent on the number of children registered. Teams will consist of between 12 and 16 skaters.
In addition to single league play, each Squirt team will have the opportunity to participate in the Groton Junior Hockey Association’s Christmas Tournament (Tourney in the Woods) which is held each year from December 26th thru December 30th. The tournament provides a minimum of three games, with a potential fourth game if the team makes the finals.
Players entering the Squirt level are expected to be reasonably proficient skaters, with a basic knowledge of team play. Coaches will focus on team play, importance of back-checking, head manning the puck, and development of head-up playmaking. Although this level is still no-check (no open body hits), more physical play will be taught and encouraged, particularly for the second year Squirts in anticipation of their move to the PeeWee level, where full checking is allowed.
